Islas Ladrones - 'Thieves Islands'
These rugged volcanic islands, 27 miles due south of Boca Chica, sit close to the continental shelf and offer some excellent diving. The underwater topography is defined by pinnacles, large boulders, rocky out-crops and intermittent patches of hard and soft coral.
The islands and the approaching waters harbour numerous and varied dive sites with an abundance of marine life. The density of fish life is often staggering with schools of Jack, Barracuda and Snapper being regularly encountered. Around the rocks and pinnacles, are populations of smaller reef species like King Angelfish, Damselfish, Surgeonfish, Parrotfish, Triggerfish, Wrasse, Gobies, Blennies and Moorish Idols.
Giant Manta Rays can be encountered from May to November, with other species (including Eagle, Mobula and Devil) being seen year round. White-tip, Black-tip, and Nurse are the most frequently sighted sharks throughout the year. At certain times of year, Humpback Whales pass through the region, often with their calves. Even if you don't see them, it's not unusual to hear them when diving.
The best visibility is from December to May when visibility can get up to 80ft. The diving here is more advanced than the Islas Secas, as you may come across stronger currents and some colder water.
These islands offer some excellent diving opportunities.
